“Iranian Nuclear Plant Struck, No Radiation Release”

Date:

An incident at an Iranian nuclear power plant has raised concerns about potential radioactive contamination. The facility, located in Bushehr, was reportedly struck by a projectile, according to statements from both Russia and Iran. As of now, there is no confirmation of any nuclear material release resulting from the incident that occurred on Tuesday evening.

According to the Rosatom CEO, Alexey Likhachev, the strike hit an area near the metrology service building at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, in close proximity to the operational power unit. The plant is operated by technicians from Rosatom using Russian-manufactured low-enriched uranium.

Any attack on a nuclear plant poses the risk of releasing radioactive substances into the environment, especially concerning in times of conflict. The plant’s location near the Persian Gulf raises concerns about potential water contamination, which could have catastrophic effects on the Gulf States that rely on desalination plants for their water supply.

Rosatom confirmed that no personnel were injured in the incident and stated that the radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits. The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran also reported no financial, technical, or human damages at the plant. Iran attributed the strike to the United States and Israel, as reported by Tass.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has been informed by Iran about the projectile hitting the Bushehr NPP premises, with no reported damage to the plant or injuries to the staff. The nature of the projectile remains unknown as neither country has released images of the damage.

Situated 750 kilometers south of Tehran, the Bushehr plant is strategically located near an Iranian navy base and a civilian-military airport with air defense systems. The facility has a history of being targeted, notably during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, but it has continued its operations, supplying civilian nuclear power.

Despite recent military actions targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, including the bombing of enrichment sites by the US, Bushehr has not been directly attacked in those incidents, maintaining its status as a functioning civilian nuclear power station.
