Iran’s Ayatollah Eyes Putin for Refuge Amid Unrest

Date:

Iran’s Ayatollah may seek refuge with Russian President Vladimir Putin if the current wave of national unrest threatens his safety, according to a reliable source.

Widespread protests have erupted in Iran, starting in Tehran and spreading across the country, triggered by the sharp devaluation of the rial against foreign currencies. The anger over soaring inflation and food prices during the New Year period has intensified the demonstrations, posing a significant challenge to the Ayatollah’s rule.

Intelligence reports suggest that the Ayatollah’s fate hinges on the loyalty of his inner circle of protectors. Should they fail to shield him or betray him, a contingency plan exists for the 86-year-old leader to flee with around 20 close associates, including his son and designated successor.

Analysts compare the potential scenario to the fate of Syria’s Bashar Al-Assad, who sought refuge in Russia when rebels seized control of his country in 2024. It is believed that if the Ayatollah were to escape, Putin’s Moscow would be his likely destination due to his close ties with the Russian leader and the perceived cultural similarities between Iran and Russia.

Reports also mention a strategy by the Iranian regime to secure their assets and funds in Russia as a precautionary measure, indicating an escape plan if the situation in Tehran deteriorates. This plan mirrors Assad’s actions when he transferred Syrian assets to Russia upon seeking asylum.

The Ayatollah has faced accusations of embezzlement through purported charity organizations, with the US imposing sanctions on two Iranian entities linked to him in 2021. The sanctioned organizations were found to control significant portions of the Iranian economy, benefiting the Ayatollah and other high-ranking officials. The US vowed to target those who exploit the system for personal gain under the guise of aiding the Iranian populace.
