One such case is that of Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old clothing store owner who was arrested at his residence for participating in anti-government protests. Soltani is set to have only a brief ten-minute meeting with his family before facing execution by hanging on Wednesday.
Activists reported that between 2,000 to 3,000 people have lost their lives since the protests erupted just over two weeks ago. Iranians managed to make international calls after a period of restricted communication imposed by authorities in what was described as a severe ‘blackout.’
Iranian state television has finally acknowledged the significant death toll, recognizing the country’s “many martyrs.” The state media attributed the casualties to the actions of “armed and terrorist groups” that caused numerous deaths.
In response to the ongoing situation, the Foreign Secretary has announced plans for additional sanctions targeting key sectors in Iran, including finance, energy, and transportation. The UK Foreign Office has summoned the Iranian ambassador to discuss the government’s handling of the protests.
US President Donald Trump has encouraged Iranians to continue protesting, emphasizing consequences for those responsible for violence. Trump expressed his stance on social media, declaring a halt to all official meetings with Iranian representatives until the violent crackdown on protestors ends.
The protests, initially triggered by economic concerns, have escalated into a nationwide movement met with harsh suppression by Iranian authorities. Despite challenges posed by internet and phone network blackouts, images and reports from the protests are gradually reaching the global audience.
