ISIS bride Shamima Begum is reportedly waiting for an opportunity to escape a jihadi camp as Syrian government forces take control of areas with tent cities. Begum, a former British schoolgirl who lost her British citizenship, is currently residing in the Al-Roj detention camp along with about 2,000 female and child detainees.
As Syrian government forces advance into Kurdish-controlled regions, Begum is among 15 British or dual-national women remaining at the camp. While US forces are working on evacuating male prisoners to Iraq, there has been no recent communication regarding the fate of the female detainees.
According to other women in the camp, Begum and several others are hopeful that the ongoing offensive will create a chance for them to flee the camp. These women have access to illegal phones to communicate with ISIS sympathizers worldwide, anticipating a resurgence of the extremist movement post the collapse of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in 2024.
Despite some detainees fearing reprisals from the new Syrian government due to ISIS’s rivalry, many still cling to the hope of a revival of the Islamist movement. The camp also houses radicalized women, with some remaining concealed. Umm Hamza, an Egyptian woman formerly married to an ISIS fighter, disclosed the presence of dangerous and radical women within the camp who pose a threat to others.
Amidst the uncertainties, some women in the camp express regret for their past actions and are prepared to face the consequences. The situation remains tense as the camp accommodates a mix of individuals with varying backgrounds and ideologies.
