Tragic details have emerged regarding the final messages of one of the five Italian divers who tragically lost their lives in a scuba diving incident in the Maldives. Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of ecology at the University of Genoa, emphasized the importance of studying the underwater environment just hours before her untimely death. Her body, along with those of her daughter and two colleagues, is still missing and presumed to be located deep inside an underwater cave.
Carlo Sommacal, Ms. Montefalcone’s husband, defended her character, stating she was not a reckless person and would never endanger the lives of others. The group of divers met their unfortunate fate while exploring a cave at a depth of approximately 50 meters in Vaavu Atoll, exceeding the recreational diving limit in the Maldives.
The cause of the tragic accident is still under investigation, with rough weather hindering recovery efforts. Italian officials are working diligently to retrieve the victims’ bodies and provide support to their families. The expedition was not part of the planned scientific research mission, highlighting the risks associated with cave diving and the need for specialized training and equipment.
Despite the challenges faced during the recovery operation, efforts are ongoing to explore the remaining chambers of the cave. Italian authorities are in contact with the families of the victims, offering assistance and support during this difficult time. The Maldives tourism ministry has suspended the operating license of the vessel involved pending further investigation.
