Jannik Sinner is reportedly contemplating skipping the newly introduced mixed doubles event at the US Open due to a disagreement over prize money. Last year, the tournament revamped the competition, with Sinner initially planning to team up with Katerina Siniakova before withdrawing due to illness.
During the event, Carlos Alcaraz partnered with British No. 1 Emma Raducanu, while Novak Djokovic paired up with Olga Danilovic. The competition took place before the singles draw, and Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori emerged as the eventual winners, claiming a prize of $1 million.
However, concerns have been raised by players, including Sinner, who are considering boycotting the event unless there is a substantial increase in the prize money allocation and better player welfare conditions, as reported by The Times.
This move is part of a broader effort by a group of players advocating for higher prize money at Grand Slam tournaments. At the recent French Open, some players limited their pre-tournament media engagements to just 15 minutes as part of an ongoing protest.
In contrast, Wimbledon has announced a significant increase in the total prize fund for this year’s championship, with the overall pot rising by 25% compared to the previous year. Despite the boost, players are adamant about receiving 22% of the total revenue generated, a target that has not been met even with the recent rise in prizes.
Deborah Jevans, chair of the All England Club, expressed frustration over the revenue-centric approach to determining prize money and emphasized the club’s commitment to reinvesting in the sport for long-term sustainability.
