Keir Starmer has criticized Israel for launching extensive attacks on Lebanon, expressing concerns about the fragile Iran-US ceasefire being at risk.
The UK Prime Minister stated that the ongoing bombings by Tel Aviv were unjustified, especially as doubts surfaced regarding the continuation of Donald Trump’s airstrike campaign. Starmer highlighted the difficulty in determining if the strikes violated the ceasefire but emphasized the necessity for them to cease immediately.
Shortly after the ceasefire declaration, Israel escalated its military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon, a group backed by Iran, arguing that it fell outside the ceasefire terms. However, Iran accused Tel Aviv of breaching the agreement.
Starmer also denounced Donald Trump for his aggressive remarks towards Tehran and his calls for the destruction of Iranian civilization. He emphasized his disagreement with such language, citing British values and principles during an interview on ITV’s Talking Politics podcast.
During his Middle East tour to meet with allies in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, Starmer expressed concerns over the retaliatory strikes from Iran following the US-Israeli bombing campaign. He emphasized the need to uphold the principles of collective self-defense while monitoring the use of UK bases by the US.
Addressing the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Starmer stressed the importance of ensuring free passage for ships through the vital shipping lane. He highlighted the confusion surrounding the status of the strait and the potential impact on global oil and gas prices.
Regarding the ceasefire and the situation in the region, Starmer underscored the need for clarity and emphasized the UK’s stance on open navigation through the strait. He highlighted the importance of actions to secure a lasting ceasefire and ensure the strait remains accessible for safe navigation.
After discussions with Saudi and UAE leaders, Starmer highlighted the shock and relief felt in the region following the attacks and subsequent ceasefire. He emphasized the fragility of the ceasefire and the necessity for continued efforts to maintain peace and ensure the stability of the Strait of Hormuz.
Starmer also emphasized the need for change post-Iran crisis, rejecting a return to the status quo and calling for a stronger response in various critical areas. This sentiment was echoed by Yvette Cooper, warning against Iran’s potential control of the Strait of Hormuz with tolls and emphasizing the importance of international maritime law.
Additionally, the Foreign Secretary cautioned about Israel’s actions in Lebanon potentially destabilizing the region, urging for Lebanon’s inclusion in the ceasefire to prevent further escalation and promote peace in the area.
