Keir Starmer Pushes Forward with Digital ID Plans

Date:

Keir Starmer is determined to move forward with contentious digital ID initiatives despite their lack of popularity among the public.

In the wake of a decline in support for the proposal, the Prime Minister suggested that surveys should inquire whether individuals are interested in simplifying identity verification processes, such as for property rentals or purchases, by utilizing a convenient digital solution on their smartphones instead of carrying physical documents like passports, driving licenses, or birth certificates.

Acknowledging the diminishing backing for digital ID cards from 35% to -14% following Mr. Starmer’s announcement, recent polling by More in Common indicates a shift in public opinion.

To counter the negative sentiment, the PM aims to highlight the advantages of the policy, including the ease of purchasing alcohol at the legal age and assisting students in avoiding the hassle of presenting birth certificates for university accommodation.

Mr. Starmer emphasized the necessity of showcasing the benefits of digital ID to enable people to access entitled support efficiently, drawing on international examples where voluntary digital ID adoption has proven highly beneficial.

In an effort to dispel misconceptions, Mr. Starmer engaged with content creators and social media influencers to address concerns about potential privacy intrusions associated with the government app-stored ID cards.

Responding to worries about privacy invasion, Mr. Starmer assured that the digital IDs would be securely encrypted to safeguard personal data, pointing out that many individuals already store sensitive information like bank details on their mobile devices.

Despite earlier assurances that digital ID would not be compulsory, the PM admitted that it would be mandatory for job applications; however, alternative physical ID options will be available for those without smartphones or preferring a non-digital approach.

The initiative to introduce digital ID was launched by Mr. Starmer as part of efforts to combat illegal migration, with plans to implement the digital IDs on smartphones within the GOV.UK wallet app. This system aims to facilitate verification of an individual’s right to reside and work in the UK by simplifying immigration status checks against a centralized database of eligible residents.
