Keir Starmer Slams Israel’s Qatar Airstrikes

Date:

Keir Starmer has criticized the recent airstrikes carried out by Israel on Hamas leaders in Qatar as “unacceptable.” This condemnation came during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Following the discussions, a spokesperson from Downing Street labeled the bombings as a “flagrant violation” and highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The airstrike, which targeted top Hamas officials in Doha, occurred as they were convening to discuss a proposed ceasefire in Gaza.

In a statement after the meeting, a Downing Street representative stated that Starmer condemned Israel’s actions in Doha, emphasizing that the strikes breached the sovereignty of a key partner and hindered the pursuit of peace.

Regarding Gaza, Starmer expressed deep concern and urged Israel to change its approach by allowing aid to reach the area and ceasing offensive operations. The leaders also agreed on the importance of releasing hostages taken by Hamas nearly two years ago.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, the PM criticized the strikes on Qatar, emphasizing that they infringed on the sovereignty of the country and undermined peace efforts. He mentioned speaking with the Emir of Qatar to convey support for diplomatic solutions aiming at a ceasefire and a two-state resolution.

In response to criticism, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer downplayed suggestions that the UK had given a special welcome to the Israeli president, stating that Herzog’s visit was private.

After the meeting, Herzog characterized the discussions as tough but essential, highlighting the ability of democratic allies to engage in robust debates in the face of shared security challenges.
