Keir Starmer has reiterated his stance to Donald Trump, affirming that he will not be influenced to involve Britain in the Iran conflict.
This statement follows President Trump’s recent outburst, where he indicated that the UK and its allies should independently ensure the reopening of the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Trump also suggested he is willing to withdraw from the crisis he initiated, even without reaching a peace agreement with Iran.
During a press briefing on Wednesday morning, Mr. Starmer emphasized that the UK’s response to the situation will have a lasting impact. He mentioned plans to strengthen ties with Europe and announced that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will lead a meeting with 35 allies to discuss strategies for reopening the Strait, potentially involving military measures.

Mr. Starmer stated, “The conflict in the Middle East has now extended into a second month. While we are actively working towards de-escalation and peace, the repercussions of this war will shape our nation’s future.
“Today, I want to assure the British public that despite the intensity of this storm, we are well-equipped to endure it and have a comprehensive strategy to emerge as a more resilient and secure nation.”
He continued, “I am not willing to subject the British people to another crisis, only to return to the status quo afterward.
“Therefore, in terms of our economy, energy, and defense, there will be a distinct change this time. We aim to make Britain a fairer and more secure country, as this vision is essential for unity amid the crisis and will define us for generations to come.”
The Government is exploring assistance packages and has allocated over £50 million to aid households using oil for heating. While Mr. Starmer has not yet addressed the upcoming fuel duty increase in September, he mentioned considering a targeted support program for the most affected households.
When asked about President Trump’s recent suggestion of the U.S. potentially abandoning the NATO alliance, Mr. Starmer affirmed the UK’s commitment to the alliance.
He stated, “NATO remains the most effective military alliance globally, ensuring our security for many years, and we stand fully behind NATO.
“Regardless of external pressures or distractions, I will prioritize decisions in the British national interest. That’s why I am resolutely stating that this conflict is not ours, and we will not be dragged into it.”
