Keir Starmer has stated his intention to remain in office amid recent upheaval within the government and the departure of two key advisors.
The Prime Minister’s spokesperson emphasized his dedication to his current responsibilities shortly after his communications director, Tim Allan, resigned. Additionally, Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s chief-of-staff and long-time advisor, also stepped down over the weekend.
When directly questioned about the possibility of resignation, the spokesperson unequivocally stated that Starmer had no plans to step down. Instead, they highlighted Starmer’s positive outlook and confidence during an address to Downing Street staff on Monday.
Starmer expressed his frustration at the erosion of the belief in the transformative power of politics and reiterated his regret over appointing Peter Mandelson. Despite the challenges, he affirmed his commitment to demonstrating that politics can effect positive change.
Recent turmoil stemmed from the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK’s envoy to Washington last year, given his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Police searches at Mandelson’s residences were part of an investigation into alleged leaks of sensitive information during his tenure as Business Secretary under Gordon Brown.
In a tribute to departing aide McSweeney, Starmer acknowledged their shared political journey and accomplishments, emphasizing McSweeney’s integral role in their successes.
Subsequently, Starmer’s communications director, Tim Allan, also announced his resignation, citing the need for a fresh team at No10. Allan, who assumed the role in September 2025, became the fourth person to leave the position since Starmer took office.
In a surprising move on Monday morning, Allan expressed his decision to step down to facilitate the formation of a new team at No10, conveying his best wishes to the Prime Minister and his colleagues.
