Families of teenagers who fell victim to knife violence are commending the removal of thousands of blades from the streets. Pooja Kanda, Caroline Willgoose, and Martin Cosser, who tragically lost their sons to teenage knife attacks, expressed gratitude for the disposal of 14,500 weapons in Home Office surrender bins since July 2025. These weapons included ninja swords, zombie-style knives, and machetes.
In addition to the surrendered blades, 783 knives were handed over to a mobile surrender van. This decrease in knife-related crimes has led to the lowest knife homicide rate in 35 years. Pooja, whose son Ronan was killed with a ninja sword in Wolverhampton, West Midlands in 2022, emphasized the importance of each knife surrendered, highlighting that it signifies a potential life saved and a family spared from devastation.
Caroline, whose son Harvey was fatally stabbed with a hunting knife at his Sheffield school, praised the government’s efforts in combating knife crime. She welcomed the installation of surrender bins in Yorkshire as a positive step towards a safer future for children across the UK.
Martin, the father of Charlie Cosser, who was stabbed to death at a party in Warnham, West Sussex, echoed the sentiment, appreciating any initiative that removes knives from the streets and potentially saves lives.
The charity Word 4 Weapons manages bins in London, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands, while a mobile surrender van by FazAmnesty collects blades in other parts of the country. With 37 Home Office-funded surrender bins in England, the initiative has gained support from individuals like Leanne Lucas, a survivor of a knife attack in Southport. Leanne emphasized the importance of safe disposal of knives and suggested replacing pointed-tip kitchen knives with rounded-tip alternatives for increased safety.
Political parties like Labour have pledged to reduce knife crime, with a noticeable 11% decrease since the general election in July 2024. The year leading to March 2026 saw 176 knife-related deaths, the lowest in over three decades. Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones applauded the surrender efforts, emphasizing the community’s increased safety with each weapon taken off the streets. The government aims to expand the surrender program to more locations to encourage individuals to hand over their knives for the greater good.
