Labour Donor Launches Internet-Free Mobile Plan

Date:

A donor affiliated with the Labour party has taken proactive steps to counter potential government actions aimed at restricting children’s access to social media. Dale Vince, known for his outspoken views, criticized tech magnates Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he perceives as their unrestricted influence over young people.

Responding to a top priority expressed by parents, the founder of the green energy company Ecotricity has introduced a mobile plan that permits children to make unlimited calls and send texts but excludes internet usage. The millionaire entrepreneur, Mr. Vince, argued that this traditional plan is necessary due to the harmful content prevalent on online platforms that children are exposed to, urging government officials to intervene.

This move comes amidst mounting pressure on the government to implement a ban preventing individuals under the age of 16 from accessing social media networks. Last month, over 60 Labour Members of Parliament urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to emulate Australia, which enforced such a ban in December. Various other countries are reportedly contemplating similar legislation, with Sir Keir implying that a ban could be a viable option.

Among Mr. Vince’s multiple business ventures is Ecotalk, which operates using EE’s mobile network infrastructure and directs profits towards land restoration and rewilding initiatives. Recently, the company unveiled a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited calls and texts within the UK starting at £4 per month. Notably, unlike most competing options, this plan does not provide internet access.

Mr. Vince emphasized the significance of the Just Talk tariff in limiting the influence of tech giants like Musk and Zuckerberg on children. He highlighted that this initiative was driven by customer demand, particularly from parents seeking a communication device that avoids online distractions. By launching this initiative promptly, Mr. Vince aims to shield children from the overwhelming digital exposure imposed by major tech companies.

Established in 2018 by Mr. Vince, Ecotalk collaborates with Chris Packham, renowned for presenting Springwatch, who serves as the organization’s chief ecologist. Together, they are dedicated to reintroducing, rewilding, and replanting across designated sites in Sussex and Devon.
