I am thrilled to assume the role of Minister for Women and Equalities in the government led by Andy Burnham. This position is now a distinct role, highlighting the significance the Labour government places on women’s rights and equalities.
We are currently facing challenging times, with conservative politicians aiming to erode the hard-fought rights of women. Additionally, online discussions are becoming increasingly contentious, advocating for a future that does not align with British values.
I am committed to moving the country forward and not backward in my new position. Whether it involves reducing child poverty, addressing violence against women and girls, or advocating for equal pay, I will dedicate my efforts to these causes.
Recently, I visited a rape crisis center where dedicated staff provide vital support to women seeking safety, security, and healing from deep traumas. Our party pledged in our manifesto to halve violence against women and girls, a commitment I will prioritize in my work.
My personal connection to these issues is profound, having managed a shelter for abused women and children before entering politics. I witnessed firsthand that rights are not abstract concepts but serve as tangible and silent protectors in people’s everyday lives.
As the legislative arm of the labor movement, it has been the responsibility of the Labour Party to secure advancements in rights, which we have achieved through legislation such as the Equal Pay Act 1970, the Sex Discrimination Act 1970, the Equality Act 2010, and the Employment Rights Act 2025.
However, not everyone supports maintaining these laws. Politicians like Nigel Farage advocate for the removal of equality laws, jeopardizing protections for women, ethnic minorities, and disabled individuals, and undermining anti-discrimination measures based on religious beliefs or sexual orientation.
It is evident that Farage has a problematic stance on these issues, demonstrated by his controversial statements regarding women’s rights and maternity leave. When conservative politicians challenge equality laws, it is crucial to remember that these laws uphold fundamental rights for all individuals, including maternity rights, disability rights, and protections against discrimination.
In my role as Minister for Women and Equalities, I am determined to prevent any regression in progress. I pledge not only to defend existing rights but also to enhance and fortify them further.
I have taken on an additional responsibility as Chair of the Labour Party, where I will engage with people nationwide, including readers of the Mirror, to gather input on the government’s priorities.
My journey with the Labour Party began in my youth, motivated by the Conservative Party’s impact on the North East. Over time, I have witnessed the positive changes brought about by Labour, including improved workplace rights, a stronger healthcare system, and increased opportunities for children.
My aim is to revitalize the party, starting with recent successes in Greater Manchester. We are facing significant challenges, but I am committed to collaborating with party members and unions to develop a winning strategy that counters divisive politics and secures a second term for Labour.
Andy Burnham has made a strong start as Prime Minister, demonstrating his willingness to challenge the status quo and inspire hope among the public.
There have been pessimistic views about the country’s decline being inevitable, accepting issues like homelessness, unaffordable public transport, and social care complexities as unavoidable. However, Labour aims to prove these views wrong.
As summer vacations are underway, I hope everyone is enjoying their time. Labour’s initiatives, such as reducing VAT on children’s activities and meals, aim to provide families with more opportunities for outings and leisure.
Upon schools reopening, we plan to lower uniform costs, expand free breakfast clubs, and increase access to free school meals for half a million more children.
