When discussing child poverty, it’s not just a theoretical concept for me. I reflect on my mother and the lingering guilt she carries due to poverty impacting not only living conditions but also self-perception.
The messages my mother conveys while watching me address poverty in Parliament are filled with unnecessary apologies, wrongly assuming fault, when in reality, the responsibility lies with the indifferent right-wing policies of my upbringing.
Conservatives and Reform fail to grasp that poverty extends beyond financial status. It encompasses shame, stigma, and the unjust feeling of culpability, leaving a lasting impact.
Historically, government policies exacerbated this situation. The two-child limit not only reduced support but also sent a damaging message, undervaluing some children and isolating certain families.
Now, there is a positive shift. Labour’s decision to eliminate the limit will alleviate nearly half a million children from poverty, including 3,000 children in Bournemouth, predominantly from working families facing systemic barriers.
This tangible action on the high cost of living involves more than rhetoric; it involves initiatives that put money back in people’s pockets and provide children with a fair beginning.
This progress, however, faces a threat. The Conservatives and Reform have expressed intentions to reinstate the two-child limit, a move that could plunge hundreds of thousands of children back into hardship, particularly at a time when families are already financially strained.
Their approach, cloaked in familiar rhetoric, places blame on struggling individuals and suggests that support should be limited based on subjective notions of “deserving” recipients.
Having experienced the repercussions firsthand, I understand the detrimental impact this mindset can have, fostering self-blame among parents and limiting opportunities for children, perpetuating disadvantages into adulthood.
The removal of the two-child limit signifies a pivotal moment, a choice to combat child poverty rather than perpetuate it, to support families rather than pass judgment.
Children do not choose the circumstances of their birth, but politicians have the power to shape the society they build, and this Labour government is clear on which side it stands.
