Labour Party leader Keir Starmer strongly criticized Nigel Farage’s proposal to abolish the Equalities Act, labeling it as “alarming” and uncharacteristic of British values. Starmer expressed concerns that such a move by Reform UK could potentially increase discrimination against women, emphasizing the importance of tolerance and compassion in society.
Reform UK’s new equalities spokesperson Suella Braverman recently announced plans to revoke the 2010 legislation, which was introduced during Gordon Brown’s tenure as Prime Minister under the Labour government. In response, Starmer condemned the proposal during an interview on BBC Breakfast, highlighting the Act’s significance in ensuring gender equality and protecting individuals from discrimination.
Braverman defended her stance by arguing that repealing the Equalities Act would promote meritocracy over tokenism, claiming that the current law fosters division and victimhood. However, Starmer countered by pointing out that the Act also safeguards people against racism, emphasizing the historical struggles for equality in the country, particularly by the Labour Party.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has cautioned against scrapping the Equalities Act, stating that doing so would effectively legalize discrimination against individuals based on gender, disability, race, pregnancy, or sexual orientation. The Act serves as a vital legal framework protecting citizens from various forms of discrimination and upholding equality principles in society.
