Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has strongly criticized Sir Jim Ratcliffe for his recent remarks claiming that the UK has been “colonized by immigrants.” Starmer labeled the Manchester United co-owner’s comments as “offensive” and urged him to issue an apology. Taking to social media, Starmer emphasized that Britain is a nation that takes pride in its diversity and inclusivity, stating that Ratcliffe should retract his statements.
In a controversial outburst earlier today, Sir Jim, who resides in tax-free Monaco, expressed his concerns about the influx of immigrants into the UK and the high number of individuals reliant on welfare benefits. Ranked as the seventh wealthiest individual in Britain according to the Sunday Times Rich List, with a fortune of £17 billion, Sir Jim criticized the current state of affairs in the country.
During an interview with Sky News, Sir Jim remarked, “You can’t sustain an economy with nine million people on benefits and a significant influx of immigrants.” He went on to assert that the UK has experienced a form of colonization due to the rising immigrant population, citing statistics that show an increase from 58 million in 2020 to 70 million in recent years.
Addressing the issue, Labour MP Alex Sobel, whose parents immigrated to the UK from Israel in the 1970s, condemned Sir Jim’s comments as “outrageous.” Sobel highlighted the valuable contributions immigrants make to British society across various sectors, dismissing Ratcliffe’s statements as ill-informed and divisive.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy expressed her pride in the UK’s diversity and acknowledged the need to invest in the skills of the country’s youth. They highlighted the incongruity of his statements given his tax-exile status in Monaco and emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting the diverse makeup of Manchester United supporters.
