Labour leader Keir Starmer has expressed gratitude for the NHS workers, volunteers, and armed forces members who will be working this holiday season. In his Christmas message from No10, the Prime Minister commended those donning their uniforms and reaching out to those in need. He highlighted the dedication of healthcare professionals, emergency services, and the courageous armed forces personnel, along with numerous volunteers providing essential services. Starmer also acknowledged the challenges faced by many due to the cost of living and emphasized the importance of reaching out to support one another during this festive period.
Additionally, the Prime Minister hosted a pre-Christmas dinner at Downing Street for 93 public sector workers and their families to show appreciation. Among the attendees were individuals like staff nurse Zoe Lucas and Detective Sergeant Stacey Bailey, recognized for their significant contributions in healthcare and law enforcement. Research by the Trades Union Congress revealed that approximately 1.2 million individuals, including caregivers, nurses, and retail employees, will be on duty on Christmas Day. The TUC emphasized the importance of recognizing and thanking those working tirelessly to ensure essential services continue to operate during the holiday season.
Furthermore, the TUC highlighted the significance of the recently passed Employment Rights Bill, which is expected to bring improvements for workers, including measures like day one sick pay rights and a ban on exploitative zero-hours contracts. The TUC Secretary General expressed optimism that these new provisions will enhance job security, increase pay, and promote dignity in the workplace for millions of workers nationwide.
