Rachel Reeves has committed to providing significant funding to modernize the railway system in the UK, criticizing the Tories and Reform for proposing to withdraw £45 billion from the North.
During a press conference in Leeds, the Chancellor announced that additional funding for Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) would be revealed in the upcoming spending review to ensure tangible improvements in travel experiences and communities. Reeves, who is also the Labour MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, emphasized the personal importance of transforming transportation infrastructure.
The initial phase of the plan will focus on enhancing connections between Sheffield and Leeds, Leeds and York, and Leeds and Bradford. Subsequent phases will introduce a new route from Liverpool to Manchester via Manchester airport and Warrington, along with improved connections eastwards from Manchester to Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York.
Reeves criticized Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, alleging that both would neglect the North of England. She expressed confidence in the Labour commitment to fully supporting Northern Powerhouse Rail, contrasting it with the opposition’s intentions to cancel the project.
Furthermore, Reeves assured that additional funding could be expected at the spending review to accelerate the project’s timeline for delivering benefits by the early 2030s. She reiterated her dedication to securing the necessary financial support, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the initiative.
