Labour Party Chair Commends Keir Starmer’s Vigilance

Date:

The leader of the Labour Party has cautioned Vladimir Putin that the UK Government is closely monitoring all Russian activities in British waters following the sighting of a suspicious vessel in the Channel.

Anna Turley, the Labour Party chair, praised Keir Starmer’s efforts on the global stage and expressed pride in the collaboration with allies. An oil tanker named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, passing 20 miles north of Guernsey in the early morning, according to tracking data.

Tavian is believed to be linked to Vladimir Putin’s ‘shadow fleet’ utilized to circumvent restrictions on Russian oil trading.

In an interview with Sky News, Ms. Turley emphasized the government’s vigilance in monitoring maritime activities and commended Keir Starmer’s international engagements. She highlighted the importance of upholding international law, ensuring citizen safety, and closely tracking Russian actions in British waters.

This development occurred shortly after the UK supported the US in seizing a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander described the captured vessel, Marinera, as part of the shadow fleet financing Russia’s activities in Ukraine.

He stressed the necessity for UK collaboration with international partners, such as the US, to counter Russian strategies to evade sanctions. The UK’s involvement included RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce in aiding the operation.

During the operation, US special operations aircraft landed in the Scottish Highlands before proceeding northward. British personnel were not directly involved in boarding the vessel, as confirmed by Defence Secretary John Healey in a parliamentary briefing.

The Venezuelan-linked ship, formerly known as Bella 1, was intercepted as it traversed the waters between Iceland and Scotland. The US military’s European Command expressed gratitude on social media for the UK’s unwavering support in the operation.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, Mr. Alexander elaborated on the vessel’s designation as stateless under international law and its attempts to evade detection. He emphasized the UK’s commitment to combatting illegal funding that fuels conflicts like Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

He reiterated the importance of working with allies to confront Russian attempts to circumvent sanctions and disrupt illicit funding channels supporting Putin’s military endeavors.
