Wild campers in the Lake District are flouting the Countryside Code, leading to a surge in issues like human waste, fly-camping, and irresponsible behavior this summer, according to campaigners. The national park’s management states that some visitors are causing distress to locals through thoughtless parking, inconsiderate camping, and widespread littering, disregarding the government’s “leave no trace” guidelines. Problems such as blocked paths by campervans, discarded sanitary items, unleashed dogs, and other misconduct have been reported.
Judith Derbyshire, a councilor, highlighted a report from patrol officers who are addressing anti-social conduct in the area. She emphasized the escalating challenges faced by enforcement officers and volunteers in preserving the national parks due to ongoing issues.
Enforcement measures, including fines of up to £100, have been imposed for environmental offenses like littering, starting fires, and misusing motorhomes. However, locals claim that these rules are frequently being violated. Derbyshire noted a significant rise in visitors post-Covid, with many arriving without accommodation plans, leading to unauthorized camping that strains designated sites.
Collaboration between authorities, residents, and visitors is crucial to tackling the situation effectively. Derbyshire stressed the importance of educating visitors on proper conduct in the Lake District to ensure a sustainable balance between tourism and environmental preservation. Instances of environmental violations, including littering, wildfires, and fly camping, have been documented in the Friends of the Lake District’s annual survey, reflecting growing concerns among residents.
