“Late Judge Exposes LGBTQ+ Ban Brutality in UK Armed Forces”

Date:

The outspoken insights of the pioneering judge who investigated the prohibition on LGBTQ+ individuals serving in the British armed forces were disclosed recently, almost a year after his passing. Actor and peer Michael Cashman delivered a speech penned by Lord Etherton before his demise in May of the previous year at the Imperial War Museum.

In his address, Lord Etherton detailed the presence of “institutional homophobia” and disturbing findings he encountered while conducting his inquiry into the ban, which was enforced until the year 2000. He highlighted a climate of homophobia, bullying, blackmail, sexual assaults, invasive inquiries into sexual orientation, disgraceful medical assessments including conversion therapy, abrupt dismissals, and severe repercussions on mental health, homelessness, employment, relationships, and financial stability.

He further pointed out that the institutionalized homophobia within the Ministry of Defence and senior ranks of the Armed Forces enabled aggressive and often abusive investigations by the Special Investigations Branch. Concerns persist regarding the sluggish disbursement of compensation to those impacted by the prohibition.

A total of 1,312 individuals have sought financial reparations, with 986 applications for discharge payments and only 667 decisions made by December 15th. Additionally, less than a third of the 1,053 requests for impact payments have been addressed.

Lord Cashman, known for his groundbreaking role in Eastenders featuring the first televised same-sex kiss in a soap opera in 1989, recited Lord Etherton’s lecture at an event organized by actor Russell Tovey, with Lord Etherton’s spouse, Andrew, in attendance.

Peter Gibson, CEO of Fighting With Pride, emphasized the urgency of the Ministry of Defence fulfilling its promise of issuing reparations promptly to those who have endured immense suffering due to the harsh policies enforced by the British government. He highlighted the importance of providing support to Veterans who may have had their claims rejected without clear reasons, urging them to seek assistance for potential appeals.

Gibson stressed the significance of honoring Lord Etherton’s wishes by ensuring prompt and thorough execution of reparations by the Ministry of Defence.
