“Late Start Frustrates Fans at Ne-Yo and Akon Concert”

Date:

Months of anticipation for the Ne-Yo and Akon concert in Calgary turned into hours of frustration for Amandeep Walia and his wife at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The delay in starting the show left fans with floor and lower level seats waiting in the concourse. Walia expressed concerns over the disorganization and safety implications of the situation, estimating that the night cost them around $700.

Initially scheduled for 8 p.m., the concert was delayed to 9 p.m. and eventually began close to 10:45 p.m. Despite the delay, Walia acknowledged that the performance itself was fantastic but lamented missing the full experience due to the late start.

This incident is not isolated, as other high-profile shows this summer, such as Jay-Z’s final Yankee Stadium performance and Harry Styles in Mexico City, also faced significant delays, prompting questions about what concert tickets guarantee for fans. Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl highlighted that ticket holders have limited rights, mainly ensuring the seat and a show to some extent, with little recourse for delays.

Ashish Sharma from the Consumers Council of Canada emphasized the lack of statutory rights for concert delays, suggesting the need for better communication with consumers when such delays occur. With the increasing costs associated with live entertainment and the complexity of organizing such events, fans are advised to be aware of the terms and conditions before purchasing tickets. Dahl pointed out that public pressure may hold more leverage than contractual agreements in such situations.

Despite the delayed start, Walia acknowledged the performers’ efforts but suggested that Ticketmaster should consider offering rebates or credits for future shows in cases of significant delays to enhance customer satisfaction.
