“Lindsey Vonn Updates Fans After Third Surgery”

Date:

Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn provided an update on her condition after her third surgery following a severe crash that shattered her hopes of competing in the Olympic Games at Milan‑Cortina. The 41-year-old American sustained a leg injury during the Milan Cortina Games, forcing her to be airlifted to a hospital following a serious accident shortly after tearing her ACL.

Vonn, a member of Team USA, collided with a gate, leading to a loss of balance and a collision with the slope just 13 seconds into her women’s downhill run. Following initial treatment on site, she was transported by air to a nearby medical facility for further care.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday evening, Vonn shared, “I underwent my third successful surgery today. The concept of success holds a different significance for me now compared to a few days ago. Progress is gradual, but I am confident in my recovery. I express gratitude to the exceptional medical team, friends, family, and the overwhelming support and love from people worldwide.

She also extended congratulations to her teammates and all Team USA athletes who continue to inspire her and provide a source of encouragement.

It was later confirmed that Vonn would require multiple surgeries to address her leg injury, with the third surgery now completed. Although facing an extended recovery period, there is a possibility that she might return to skiing within a year.

Fellow skier Federica Brignone, who endured multiple leg fractures and an ACL tear at the 2025 Italian Championships last April, made a comeback in just 10 months. Brignone competed against Vonn at Cortina’s Olympia piste.

Andrea Panzeri, the Head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, mentioned, “Assessing the situation without reviewing X-rays is challenging. The type of fracture sustained, despite the athlete’s age, can impact their career. However, Brignone overcame a severe fracture and recovered successfully.”

Meanwhile, orthopaedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna from Milan’s Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre noted, “Recovery tends to be slower as one ages, despite Vonn’s exceptional physical attributes. However, motivation and mindset play critical roles. There is a potential risk of early arthritis development, leading to joint issues, stiffness, and pain over time.”

Vonn’s history of leg injuries, including a partial knee implant, may influence her recovery timeline.
