A Liverpool fan with racist behavior has been prohibited from attending football events after verbally attacking a Premier League player who scored against his team. Harry Brown, aged 25, directed derogatory messages at Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz, a Brazilian player, following his goals in two separate matches. Brown, residing in Barrow, Cumbria, was convicted of two counts of offensive communications and received a three-year ban from football activities along with a requirement to perform 150 hours of community service within a year.
During court proceedings in north Cumbria, it was revealed that Brown had messaged Muniz on social media in December 2024, using racially charged language like “f****** slave” and expressing ill wishes towards Muniz’s family. Muniz was subjected to this abuse after scoring against Liverpool in a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Subsequently, in another game between Fulham and Liverpool, Brown continued with his offensive messages, including one with a monkey emoji and a slur.
The situation escalated when Muniz reported the messages to his club, leading to Brown’s arrest at his workplace in Barrow Magistrates’ Court. Muniz expressed deep offense at the racial insults, emphasizing that the derogatory terms and wishes for harm were racially motivated. Brown’s defense lawyer acknowledged his client’s regret and described his actions as impulsive and unacceptable.
In response, Fulham released a statement affirming a zero-tolerance stance against abuse and emphasizing the repercussions for online misconduct. Brown had confessed to the charges during a previous court appearance. Chief Inspector Kim Brown of Cumbria Police condemned the racist abuse, highlighting the collaborative efforts with football authorities and the victim to bring Brown to justice.
The incident underlines a broader issue of discrimination in football, with anti-racism organizations reporting a significant increase in discrimination reports during the 2024/25 season. This surge in reported incidents underscores the ongoing challenges in combating racism within the sport.
