London Marathon organizers are considering expanding the event to span two days by 2027 in order to accommodate more runners. Since its inception in 1981, the marathon has been a staple in the capital city.
With participant numbers on the rise, plans are underway to transform the marathon into a weekend-long affair to accommodate the growing interest. The objective is to provide an opportunity for more individuals to engage in the iconic event and generate positive impacts for London.
A spokesperson for the London Marathon expressed, “The TCS London Marathon is renowned as the world’s most popular marathon, and we are continuously seeking innovative ways to enhance participation while contributing positively to London.”
While the extension to a two-day event is still pending approval, the immediate focus remains on delivering an exceptional experience for all participants in the upcoming 2026 TCS London Marathon scheduled for Sunday, April 26.
Chief executive Hugh Brasher emphasized the commitment to inclusivity, stating, “As the world’s most popular marathon, we are dedicated to exploring creative avenues to increase participation and bring positive outcomes to London.”
The Mayor of London’s spokesperson also conveyed enthusiasm for potential collaboration with London Marathon partners to explore the feasibility of hosting a two-day event in the future.
The public response to this year’s marathon has been overwhelming, with a record 1,133,813 applicants vying to participate, marking a 36% surge from the previous year. The event achieved its highest-ever fundraising total of £87.3 million, with last year’s edition also securing the Guinness World Record for the most finishers in a single marathon, as 56,640 participants completed the race.
