London Mayor Sadiq Khan Criticizes Labour’s Strategy

Date:

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer for neglecting “liberal, progressive voters” following the party’s loss in the Gorton and Denton by-election. Khan argued that attempting to appeal to the right-wing Reform party goes against Labour’s values and called for a reevaluation of the party’s strategy.

Khan cautioned against labeling the Green Party as “extreme,” believing it could alienate more voters from Labour. The recent by-election saw Green candidate Hannah Spencer achieve a surprise victory in Manchester, traditionally a Labour stronghold.

While Khan acknowledged the need for significant change within the party, he expressed support for Starmer’s leadership to maintain stability. Khan emphasized the importance of offering a vision of hope for the future rather than focusing on negative aspects.

In his critique published in the Guardian, Khan highlighted the flaw in taking liberal, progressive voters for granted. He stressed the necessity for Labour to reflect on its approach, considering the disappointment felt by many supporters following recent events.

Despite praising Labour’s achievements in areas like free breakfast clubs and workers’ rights, Khan noted that such accomplishments often get overshadowed by political missteps, particularly on contentious issues like Brexit, migration, and Gaza.

Khan called out former US President Donald Trump for his divisive rhetoric and emphasized the need for a more authentic approach in politics. He urged Labour to address voters’ concerns rather than exploiting them for political gain.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to defend her controversial asylum proposals in an upcoming speech. The plans, criticized for extending the waiting period for migrant workers to settle in the UK, have raised concerns within ethnic minority communities and Labour ranks.

Labour’s Deputy Leader Lucy Powell acknowledged the unease surrounding immigration policies within ethnic minority communities and highlighted the need for clearer communication on these issues. The party faces calls to adopt more progressive stances on immigration and asylum issues.

In the aftermath of the by-election loss, various Labour figures, including Unison’s general secretary Andrea Egan and MP Diane Abbott, have called for a shift towards more progressive policies. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of interpreting the election results correctly and redoubling efforts to address voters’ demands within the next three years.
