The world’s largest “capsule” hotel has recently opened its doors in London, offering almost 1,000 pods for guests seeking a unique accommodation experience. Despite its claim to fame as the largest of its kind globally, the rates are surprisingly budget-friendly, starting at just £30. This is a stark contrast to the nearby luxurious Ritz Hotel, where room prices can soar up to £1,100.
The Mirror conducted an overnight stay to explore the experience of sleeping in a capsule that felt akin to an oversized box, devoid of natural light. While capsule hotels have been around since 1979 in Japan, with smaller versions in the UK, the scale of the Zedwell Capsule Hotel sets it apart from the rest.
Located near the vibrant Piccadilly Circus in London, finding the entrance to the hotel might prove tricky. Upon arrival, the lack of a prominent sign led guests to the inconspicuous doorway beneath some scaffolding. The hotel caters not only to backpackers but also to business travelers, as observed during check-in.
The interior design of the hotel leans towards a dark grey palette, contributing to a dystopian ambiance reminiscent of a scene from a sci-fi movie. Guests are accommodated in dormitories resembling storage unit corridors, with options for female-only spaces. The capsules are stacked in pairs, with each unit offering basic amenities such as a mattress, a socket, a light, a mirror, and a fan for climate control.
Shared toilet and shower facilities are available in the hallway, ensuring convenience for guests. Despite the compact space, the capsules feature noise reduction elements to maintain privacy. The comfortable Hypnos mattresses and Egyptian cotton bedding enhance the sleeping experience, leading to a restful night.
While the concept of super-sized capsules may intrigue many due to its affordability, the confined quarters may not suit everyone’s preferences. The experience, though unique, might not appeal to those seeking more spacious accommodations.
