In a tragic turn of events, the once vibrant Welsh-speaking community in this beloved village was completely deserted, vanishing beneath the water without a trace.
The drowning of this cherished settlement remains a painful memory for locals who fought fiercely to save their homes. Despite their unwavering efforts, the UK government flooded the village to supply water to a much larger city in England.
In 1965, Capel Celyn, nestled in the Tryweryn Valley in North Wales, was permanently lost as it was submerged under a vast reservoir. The decision, driven by the Liverpool Corporation to benefit Liverpool and the Wirral, sparked controversy and political repercussions.
The residents discovered in 1955 that their village was marked for destruction to make room for the reservoir, initiating a ten-year battle. The Capel Celyn Defense Committee formed, engaging in protests and debates to oppose the scheme, which ultimately led to the village’s submersion in 1965.
The flooding swallowed approximately 800 acres of land, including the school, post office, chapel, and cemetery, displacing 48 residents out of the 67 in the valley. The loss of this traditional Welsh community, symbolizing Welsh culture and language, stirred emotions and fueled support for Welsh nationalist movements.
Today, visitors frequent the site, occasionally glimpsing the remains of houses, schools, and post offices when water levels recede. The area’s natural beauty juxtaposed with its tragic history continues to captivate tourists, providing a somber yet compelling experience.
A memorial chapel stands as a poignant reminder of the village’s past, offering a place for reflection on its legacy. As the reservoir’s water levels fluctuate during heatwaves, there is a possibility of the village resurfacing, allowing for moments of remembrance and contemplation.
