Charleroi Airport, the second largest airport in Belgium located in Brussels, is scheduled to undergo an 11-week closure in 2028 for runway renovations and overall airport revitalization. This closure, set to take place from August 15 to October 31, 2028, will impact around two million travelers, including those planning trips during the school summer holidays and the October half-term break.
The airport’s renovation project, estimated to cost approximately €50 million (£42.8 million), will involve extensive upgrades, with the primary focus being the complete resurfacing of the 3,200-meter runway. Various airlines, such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, currently operate flights to and from Charleroi Airport and will need to temporarily redirect their flights to alternative airports during the closure period.
While specific details on the rerouting of flights have not been disclosed yet, it is anticipated that flights may either be canceled or diverted. According to reports, SOWAER, the company overseeing the works, has planned a comprehensive refurbishment of the airport’s sole runway and other key infrastructure modernization initiatives for the latter part of 2028.
