A significant number of individuals in the UK would support rejoining the European Union in the event of another Brexit referendum. According to a recent Deltapoll survey conducted for The Mirror, nearly 58% of potential voters expressed their preference to return to the EU. This sentiment is especially strong among younger demographics, with 86% of 18 to 24-year-olds favoring rejoining the bloc.
The survey also highlighted that while Conservative and Reform party supporters tend to prefer maintaining the current status quo by 66% and 82% respectively, Labour and Liberal Democrat backers are in favor of rejoining the EU by 71% and 78% respectively.
Regionally, support for reentry into the EU was highest in Scotland at 73%, followed by London and Wales at 65% each. Even in areas like the Midlands and the North, where support was comparatively lower at 53% and 54% respectively, the majority still leaned towards rejoining the EU.
Efforts to mend relationships with European neighbors have been ongoing, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer securing a trade deal with Brussels. Additionally, the UK announced its intention to rejoin the Erasmus+ program, enabling British students to study in European universities post-Brexit.
Although there have been calls for deeper ties with the EU, Starmer has ruled out the idea of reversing Brexit. Instead, he aims for a closer relationship with the EU while maintaining the UK’s sovereignty. This stance has been reiterated by the government, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties with the EU while upholding certain red lines regarding rejoining the single market and customs union.
Various voices, including campaign groups like Best for Britain, have expressed the view that Brexit has been perceived as a failure by many voters. The changing global landscape, with uncertainties like the unreliability of certain allies, has contributed to the public’s desire to realign with the EU for stability and security.
