A man, identified as James Gathercole, was apprehended for indecent exposure towards a woman shortly after his release from prison. The incident occurred when the woman observed Gathercole staring at her while on a train in July last year. Subsequently, as other passengers disembarked at East Croydon, Gathercole proceeded to fully expose himself and engage in inappropriate behavior, all while maintaining eye contact with the woman, according to authorities.
Upon reaching Upper Warlingham station, the woman informed railway staff about Gathercole’s actions, leading to British Transport Police being contacted. The police swiftly responded by boarding the train at East Grinstead station and arresting Gathercole, who was found sleeping. Further investigations revealed that Gathercole had violated a sexual harm prevention order and his release conditions, having been out of prison for only 12 days.
Earlier in July 2024, Gathercole had been convicted for similar offenses on two separate occasions in London. Following this conviction, he was issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order that restricted his use of public transport without proper payment and any interaction with lone women. However, Gathercole breached these conditions on July 15, 2025, resulting in his arrest at East Grinstead station.
In addition, Gathercole had violated the terms of his prison release license by being absent from his residence after 7pm on July 9, 2025, leading to a subsequent arrest. He later admitted guilt to multiple charges, including exposure and breaching the sexual harm prevention order and prison release conditions. As a result, he was sentenced to two years and four months in prison by the Lewes Crown Court on February 2, 2026.
An additional incident involved Gathercole exposing himself and engaging in inappropriate behavior on a train in south London on June 4, 2024, as reported by the British Transport Police. Detective Constable Jean-Pierre Choolhun stated that Gathercole’s arrest was necessary, emphasizing zero tolerance for such behavior. He urged individuals witnessing or experiencing sexual offenses on the railway to report them promptly to the authorities for action.
