A man successfully climbed a frozen waterfall in a national park amidst cold Arctic conditions in the UK. Mick Ellerton, aged 48, conquered the icy waterfall at Gordale Scar near Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales as temperatures plummeted, causing the waterfall to freeze over.
This impressive achievement coincided with an upcoming severe weather event forecasted by the Met Office. Storm Goretti is expected to unleash heavy snowfall and powerful 90mph winds, prompting weather warnings across the country. The heavy snow has already resulted in numerous school closures and isolated some remote communities in the northern regions.
Mr. Ellerton praised the tranquility and beauty of the Yorkshire Dales compared to more popular tourist destinations like the Peak District. He mentioned that the frozen waterfall rarely presents the ideal conditions for climbing, having attempted it only a few times in the past six years.
An experienced climber and instructor at Lost Earth Adventures, Mr. Ellerton, originally from Australia, has a deep-rooted passion for ice climbing. He emphasized the importance of safety in outdoor activities, particularly in challenging terrains like icy waterfalls, and highlighted the necessity of proper equipment.
As he braced for Storm Goretti’s impact, Mr. Ellerton stressed the significance of mountain climbing not only for personal enjoyment but also for honing the skills essential for mountain rescue operations. He encouraged outdoor exploration while emphasizing the need for caution and preparedness to ensure a safe and fulfilling experience in nature.
Met Office’s Chief Forecaster, Neil Armstrong, warned of significant snow impacts in Wales and the Midlands due to the approaching storm, which could also bring disruptions across other regions with heavy rain and strong winds.
