A man convicted of killing his five-week-old daughter was caught on camera arguing with police about the tightness of his handcuffs during his arrest. Sean Jefferson, 35, was found guilty of murdering his daughter, Darcy, who sustained severe injuries including fractures to both legs, a catastrophic brain injury, and 47 rib fractures leading to her death on March 29, 2022. His conviction included charges of murder and causing grievous bodily harm at Stafford Crown Court.
Recently released body-cam footage captured the moment Jefferson and Amy Leigh Clark, Darcy’s mother, were apprehended. Jefferson was heard expressing disbelief, while Clark, from Lichfield, Staffordshire, was convicted of child negligence and causing harm to a child after an eight-week trial. In the video, Jefferson complained about the tightness of his handcuffs, threatening to file complaints against the officers for causing him discomfort.
As Jefferson protested the handcuffs’ tightness, he demanded the officer’s badge number and threatened to report them for what he deemed as mistreatment. Another officer explained that they were getting the key to loosen the cuffs. Jefferson raised his voice, expressing frustration and accusing the officer of hurting him. The arrest occurred a day after police responded to a call at the family’s residence when Darcy collapsed on Mother’s Day. Darcy succumbed to her injuries two days later, leading to charges against the parents in May the following year.
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald described the case as “profoundly distressing,” emphasizing that baby Darcy deserved love and care from her parents. He condemned the parents’ actions as despicable and stated that the investigation team’s thoughts were with Darcy’s sibling, who faced immense loss and a challenging legal process. Jefferson and Clark await sentencing at a later date to be determined by Stafford Crown Court.
