A man impersonating a naval officer at a Remembrance Sunday event in Llandudno faced legal consequences after admitting to wearing a naval uniform without authorization. Jonathan Carley, 65, expressed to the police, “I’ve been expecting you,” acknowledging his actions. Carley, from Harlech, Gwynedd, justified his attire by stating he sought a feeling of inclusion by wearing the uniform. However, magistrates in Llandudno disapproved of his actions and charged him with unauthorized use of uniform/dress bearing the insignia of His Majesty’s Forces.
During the event on November 9, Carley sported the naval uniform and later informed authorities that the uniform was rightfully issued to him during his cadet days. Nevertheless, he had embellished the attire with rear admiral rings from a tailor and purchased medals online. Following the incident, District Judge Gwyn Jones imposed a fine of £500 on Carley, along with a requirement to pay £85 for prosecution costs and a £200 surcharge. Judge Jones criticized Carley, remarking, “It’s regrettable that you opted to behave in such a manner on a day of great significance for many.” At the well-attended service, Carley flaunted medals, including those for service in Iraq and Syria, and mingled with event organizers.
Carley was permitted to lay a wreath, salute, and stand alongside other dignitaries during the event. Subsequently, a picture of him went viral on social media, leading to his arrest on November 14, where he cryptically stated to the police, “I’ve been expecting you.” In his testimony, Carley expressed a desire for a sense of belonging and approval. Records from the London Gazette indicated his commission as a 2nd Lt (on Probation) in the reserves, with his name appearing in July 1991.
Carley had also allegedly claimed to have studied at Oxford University and Harvard before teaching at prestigious institutions like Eton, attended by notable figures such as Princes William and Harry, Boris Johnson, and David Cameron. Police initiated investigations after his image circulated on social platforms.
