A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, where he tried to stage the incident as suicide. Michael Thompson, aged 56, inflicted years of abuse on Kimberley Thompson, including controlling behavior and physical violence, before ultimately suffocating her in their Northampton residence on August 9 last year.
During the trial that spanned seven weeks, it was revealed that Thompson had recorded numerous hours of Kimberley before her death. He claimed they had consensual intercourse before discovering her lifeless body surrounded by medication and alcohol containers. However, the post-mortem examination showed only minimal levels of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine in her system, debunking Thompson’s narrative.
Thompson, residing on Pinewood Road in Northampton, chose not to attend his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court, with his defense barrister citing his absence as voluntary.
