A man involved in a fatal police chase at a golf course has been sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in prison for running over and killing a 62-year-old woman. John McDonald, 52, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Suzanne Cherry, who was struck by a van while playing golf at Aston Wood Golf Club in Shenstone, Staffordshire. The tragic incident occurred on April 11, with Ms. Cherry passing away from her injuries four days later, just before her 63rd birthday.
During the pursuit, the van driven by McDonald, along with his passengers Brett Delaney, 35, and McDonald’s son Johnny McDonald, 23, reached high speeds, damaged multiple vehicles, and engaged in reckless driving maneuvers. The vehicle ultimately crashed into Ms. Cherry, leading to her untimely death.
The court revealed that the trio had fled the scene after causing the fatal injuries to Ms. Cherry. Additionally, they were found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud related to fraudulent roofing work conducted under the guise of their company, Approved Roofs Ltd.
Prior to the fatal collision, the police had been monitoring the van following reports of substandard roof repairs targeting elderly customers. The court heard that the defendants had received significant sums of money from vulnerable individuals for unnecessary roof services.
All three defendants were sentenced for their roles in the crimes, with John McDonald receiving the longest prison term of 13-and-a-half years. The judge condemned their actions and highlighted the devastating impact on Ms. Cherry’s family and the community.
In a statement, Ms. Cherry’s husband expressed his grief over the loss of his wife, describing her as an exceptional individual who inspired many with her achievements in various aspects of life.
