“Married Couple Overcomes Dementia with Adventure Trips”

Date:

A married couple, previously concerned about their ability to travel together due to a significant diagnosis, have devised a way to continue their adventures. Howard Davidson, a talented clarinet player, showcased his skills by performing the Last Post during a Remembrance Service near his residence in Keynsham. However, life has changed for the 76-year-old since being diagnosed with dementia amidst the Covid lockdown. His wife, Trish, shared that they can no longer engage in conversations as before, with her now serving as his conversational cue.

Anticipating the diagnosis due to a family history of the condition, Trish noted Howard’s memory lapses early on. Despite the challenges, Trish remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of mental stimulation in maintaining Howard’s youthfulness beyond expectations. To cope with their new reality, the couple has chosen to embark on assisted trips with Dementia Adventure annually since 2022. This organization offers inclusive holidays for individuals living with dementia and their companions.

Their initial experience in 2022 to the Isle of Wight marked the beginning of a series of trips that have become a cherished tradition. Joined by other couples and guides, the couple enjoyed a stress-free vacation where Howard indulged in his passion for nature photography while Trish engaged in guided tours. Activities, such as glass blowing and scenic train rides, added unique and enjoyable elements to their trips.

Dementia Adventure ensures a comfortable stay for guests, with round-the-clock assistance, organized activities, and private ensuite rooms. Despite the cost of approximately £2,000 per person for a five-day trip, the organization offers subsidies to make the holidays accessible to all. Trish expressed gratitude for the well-structured itineraries that alleviate her stress and provide a roadmap for their daily activities.

Each holiday concludes with a personalized photobook for guests to cherish and share memories with loved ones, especially valuable for individuals with dementia who may struggle to retain detailed recollections. With 11 upcoming trips planned to various scenic destinations, Dementia Adventure’s Chief Executive, Fiona Petit, highlighted the organization’s commitment to making travel and adventure accessible to individuals living with dementia, offering rejuvenating experiences in nature that can be truly priceless.
