Hundreds of individuals, including patients, staff, and visitors, lost their lives at a hospital in Sudan as paramilitary forces carried out a deadly attack. The death toll in the Sudanese city has surpassed 1,500, leading to a harrowing situation described as “hell on Earth.”
Reports from the western city of el-Fasher in war-torn Sudan detail disturbing atrocities committed by fighters who seized the provincial capital of North Darfur over the weekend, according to the UN. Specifically, 460 patients were tragically killed at the Saudi Maternity Hospital on Tuesday by members of the Rapid Support Forces. Witness accounts reveal that RSF fighters engaged in house-to-house violence, targeting civilians, including women and children, resulting in numerous fatalities.
The ongoing conflict for control in Sudan has already claimed the lives of over 40,000 people, with human rights organizations suggesting this figure is significantly underestimated. This crisis has escalated into one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies, displacing more than 14 million individuals. The recent capture of el-Fasher by an influential Arab-led force has sparked concerns of potential further division within Africa’s third-largest nation, reminiscent of past events that led to South Sudan’s independence.
Eyewitnesses and aid workers have shed light on the brutal actions of the RSF following their takeover of the last army stronghold in Darfur after an extensive siege period. The Sudan Doctors Network reported that RSF fighters mercilessly killed everyone inside the Saudi Hospital, indiscriminately targeting patients, caregivers, and bystanders. Various individuals, like Umm Amena, have recounted the ruthless nature of the RSF’s actions, highlighting the dire situation faced by civilians in the region.
Despite acknowledgments of “abuses” by RSF commander Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, concerns remain over the lack of transparency and accountability for the atrocities committed. Disturbing videos and witness testimonies further expose the widespread violence and human rights violations perpetrated by the RSF in Sudan.
The UN and other humanitarian agencies are working tirelessly to address the escalating crisis in Sudan, offering aid and support to the displaced and affected populations. The situation in el-Fasher remains critical, with reports of ongoing violence and mass killings requiring urgent intervention to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
