A massive fire engulfed a historic 19th-century golf club, causing a significant plume of smoke visible over a long distance.
Approximately 60 firefighters from more than 10 stations responded to the fire at West Essex Golf Club in Waltham Abbey, Epping Forest, on Monday afternoon. The entire two-story clubhouse, measuring about 25m by 15m, was impacted by the blaze, as reported by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service at 2.41pm.
Firefighting teams from Harlow, Rayleigh Weir, Loughton, Chelmsford, Grays, and other stations, including Urban Search and Rescue and Technical Rescue units, were present at the scene. Support was also provided by crews from London Fire Brigade and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Upon the arrival of the initial fire crews, it was confirmed that all individuals were safe and unharmed. Additional fire engines were requested to assist in the operation.
By 5pm, progress was being made in controlling the extensive fire and efforts were focused on preventing its spread to the rear of the building, as stated in the online incident log by the fire service. By 6.45pm, the fire had been completely extinguished.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation will be conducted once the site is deemed secure.
West Essex Golf Club, known as The West, is described as a friendly and inclusive club with a championship course designed by James Braid, set within the beautiful Epping Forest, according to their Instagram page.
Established in 1900, both the course and clubhouse were inaugurated on May 14, 1989, by Sir Michael Bonallack OBE, a highly respected amateur golfer in Britain.
