The Met Office has issued a fresh weather alert warning of potential surface water flooding due to rain and heavy showers. The yellow warning will be in effect from 5 am on Thursday until the end of the day, covering 21 areas in southern England and Wales. Rainfall amounts of 10 to 20mm are expected widely, with localized areas likely to receive over 30mm.
The saturated ground conditions are expected to lead to some instances of minor surface water flooding. The Met Office cautions that flooding may affect homes and businesses, disrupt bus and train services, and cause delays on roads due to spray and flooding. There is also a possibility of power outages. Residents in the affected areas are advised to assess the risk of flooding to their properties, create a flood plan, and prepare an emergency flood kit if necessary.
Additionally, a separate rain warning is in place for Angus (Central, Tayside & Fife) and Aberdeenshire (Grampian) from 6 pm on Wednesday until 12 pm on Thursday. The rain, potentially heavy at times, is expected to start later on Wednesday and continue into Thursday morning, with 15 to 30mm of rainfall likely across the region and up to 40mm in certain areas.
Today’s forecast from the Met Office predicts cloudy conditions with intermittent sunny spells in southern counties. Southern England should stay dry, while rain is expected in northern England and Northern Ireland, gradually moving southward as winds strengthen later in the day.
Scotland is currently experiencing snow in higher elevations and rain in some regions, with a yellow snow warning issued for northern and eastern parts of the country. Rain warnings are also in effect for Grampian and Central, Tayside & Fife regions. The UK forecast for Thursday indicates northward-moving rain, potentially heavy in some areas, with the chance of snow in north Wales, the Pennines, and Scottish mountains. Strong winds are expected to persist in the north, with temperatures remaining average.
Looking ahead to Friday through Sunday, the Met Office anticipates wintry conditions in the northern UK, with periods of rain in the south. Some drier intervals are expected on Saturday, although the weekend is likely to remain mostly cloudy.
