Met Office satellite imagery captures the movement of a Saharan dust cloud over the UK from space.
This weather phenomenon is currently drifting towards the southern regions of the UK, potentially resulting in dusty cars, colorful sunsets, and the possibility of “blood rain.”
The satellite images have revealed fine particles in the dust cloud, consisting of tiny mineral and sand fragments. According to the Met Office, this phenomenon is likely to cause hazier skies over the weekend, with a chance of a light dust coating on windows and vehicles.
Originating from North Africa, the dust cloud has traveled thousands of miles from the Sahara before reaching British skies, creating a striking display of deep orange and gold hues. Accompanying the dust cloud is a warm air mass that could lead to temperatures reaching up to 19C.
The Met Office explains that the color of the dust cloud may vary depending on the dust concentration in the atmosphere. Additionally, there is a possibility of “blood rain,” where red-colored particles mix with water droplets in the cloud.
Due to a moist south-westerly airflow and the broad dust plume, some dust may settle with the rain. The Met Office anticipates low concentrations, making it unlikely for the rainfall to appear noticeably red. Instead, a light yellowish or brownish residue may be visible on surfaces after showers.
Residents may observe dust on their cars and windows, along with slightly reduced visibility at higher altitudes. It is recommended to postpone vehicle washing until the end of the week.
While there are no health concerns, individuals with respiratory sensitivity may experience an increase in airborne dust levels. Sky News weather presenter Jo Wheeler mentioned that the impact of the Saharan dust cloud would be noticeable in the UK, leading to hazy skies and vibrant sunrises and sunsets.
This particular dust event, driven by Iberian storm Regina and high-pressure systems, is expected to impact Europe more significantly due to the distance involved.
