Met Police Pursue Charges Against Madeleine McCann Suspect

Date:

A group of detectives from Scotland Yard have been actively investigating the Madeleine McCann case for the past six months with the aim of bringing charges against Christian Brueckner in the UK, as per a reliable source.

Their efforts have now involved requesting evidence from German authorities following Brueckner’s release from prison last September, despite his consistent denial of any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

The team is reportedly confident in their ability to gather enough evidence to seek approval for charges from the Crown Prosecution Service before the 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance next year.

However, the German law prohibits the extradition of its citizens to non-EU countries, meaning that Brueckner may avoid trial in the UK unless he leaves Germany.

According to a source familiar with the investigation, the team is focused on reaching the stage of pressing charges rather than just requesting an interview, indicating a high threshold for their legal strategy.

The ongoing work, spanning six months, is centered on validating the findings of the German police by formally requesting and reviewing materials from the German authorities. The investigative lead is held by a Deputy Assistant Commissioner, as per the source.

In the event that Brueckner cannot be brought to the UK for trial, the Metropolitan Police is determined to ensure that he faces justice either in Germany or Portugal, where the alleged crime occurred. Brueckner was residing close to the Praia da Luz complex, where three-year-old Madeleine disappeared in 2007.

Although named as the primary suspect in her disappearance six years ago, charges were not pursued until his release from a German prison last year, where he served a seven-year sentence for assaulting a US pensioner in the same Algarve resort where Madeleine vanished.

A specialized team of Metropolitan detectives has been diligently compiling evidence related to the suspected abduction and murder, categorizing the investigation as a missing persons case for now.

Legal expert Bernhard Schmeilzl of Graf & Partners LLP, specializing in Anglo-German legal matters, highlighted the legal complexities in extraditing Brueckner to the UK, emphasizing the challenge due to German laws. However, the possibility of extradition to Portugal, an EU country, remains under consideration among authorities from all three countries.

Key circumstantial evidence linking Brueckner to the case includes his mobile phone records placing him near the site of Madeleine’s disappearance, his prior convictions for child abuse, and his identification to both German and British police by a witness in 2008.

Despite claims from a witness regarding Brueckner’s comments after Madeleine’s disappearance, police have not yet found forensic evidence to substantiate the case, while Brueckner continues to refute the allegations.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley previously confirmed the force’s exploration of extradition possibilities with Brueckner, citing the potential for charging him in the UK for crimes committed against a British national overseas.

Recently, Brueckner faced trial on additional rape and child abuse charges in Braunschweig but was acquitted. Madeleine, who vanished in 2007 while on holiday with her family in Portugal, remains missing, with Brueckner never charged in connection to her disappearance.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, participated in a prayer gathering on the 19th anniversary of her disappearance, marking the first public appearance with their twins, Sean and Amelie, calling for continued efforts to find Madeleine and bring justice to her case.

The Metropolitan Police reiterated their commitment to the ongoing investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, maintaining close collaboration with German and Portuguese law enforcement agencies to pursue all possible leads.
