In Mexico, the period between November and April is known for its pleasant and dry climate, attracting visitors seeking winter warmth. However, British tourists traveling to Mexico must be cautious as new stringent regulations regarding vaping have been implemented. Vaping in public spaces is now prohibited, with fines applicable on the spot. Moreover, a ban on bringing electronic cigarettes into the country means that travelers entering Mexico by land or sea with vaping devices could face legal repercussions.
Mexico had already enforced strict laws against smoking and vaping in public places since 2023, with fines of up to 3,000 Mexican pesos for violators. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recently introduced a constitutional reform prohibiting the importation, sale, and distribution of vaping products. The law became effective immediately after its publication.
Despite being tourists, individuals are not exempt from these regulations, and customs officials in popular destinations like Cancún, Cabo San Lucas, and Cozumel are actively enforcing the ban. The British government advises against bringing vaping devices into Mexico as they could be confiscated, and travelers may face fines or detainment.
The ban extends to travelers arriving in Mexico by cruise ships, with even non-nicotine devices included. Violators risk having their devices seized, hefty fines of up to $12,500, and potential detention or imprisonment for up to eight years. Authorities are strict in enforcing the ban, as reported by a traveler who faced detention and a significant fine for possessing a vape in Mexico.
Several countries, including India, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, Argentina, Qatar, and Vietnam, have also implemented laws and restrictions on vaping. In the UK, the number of vapers surpassed traditional tobacco smokers, with an estimated 5.6 million Brits vaping, constituting around 11% of the population.
