Morrisons is set to implement advanced AI checkout technology in 200 of its stores to significantly reduce wait times at the checkouts. The supermarket chain’s new Evercheck system utilizes real-time computer vision to compare scanned items with those visible in a shopper’s basket.
In case an item is missed, the system will display a gentle on-screen prompt asking the customer to rectify the issue. Morrisons stated that this technology, developed by Everseen, aims to minimize disruptions, shorten queues, and reduce the need for staff assistance during routine checkouts.
Everseen emphasized the importance of self-service checkouts being seamless and hassle-free for Morrisons shoppers. The software will integrate into the existing self-checkout systems, enhancing the efficiency without entirely replacing the current setup.
Francesca Bezoari, Morrisons’ Store Support Office Director, highlighted the partnership with Everseen as a means to deliver a quick and smooth checkout experience while empowering staff to maintain exceptional service standards.
The AI technology is designed to assist shoppers with self-corrections in real-time, ensuring a swift checkout process and enabling store colleagues to focus more on customer service rather than resolving scanning errors repeatedly.
Everseen clarified that their technology does not employ facial recognition but rather focuses on analyzing transactions to identify potential errors, without profiling or targeting individual shoppers. The system aims to enhance customer satisfaction and operational performance simultaneously.
Currently deployed in over 150,000 checkouts and 10,000 stores worldwide, Everseen’s technology is expected to cover around 40% of Morrisons’ larger-store estate in the initial rollout phase. The specific store locations and completion timeline for the technology implementation have not been disclosed by Morrisons yet.
