“Mother Guilty of Stabbing and Throwing Toddler Off Balcony”

Date:

A woman has been found guilty of the murder of her 17-month-old child by stabbing and throwing her off a hotel balcony in a horrifying incident. Channel Yonko was convicted for the death of her daughter, Hannah Yonko, who was thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Beachfront Palms Hotel in October 2024. The tragic event was discovered when the child was found abandoned on the pavement outside the hotel, prompting a response from officers at approximately 9:45 am.

Despite sustaining critical injuries, Hannah was alive when found in Galveston, US, and was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Apart from being thrown off the balcony, she had sustained three puncture wounds and multiple stab wounds, as outlined in a probable cause affidavit.

Surveillance footage from the hotel captured the moment the child fell from the balcony, and authorities recovered a bag from a hotel bin containing a knife, toys, and children’s snacks. Yonko was promptly arrested, with her mental competency becoming a focal point during the trial. Claims of insanity and belief in demonic possession were dismissed in court, leading to multiple psychiatric evaluations being ordered.

Psychiatric specialist Edward Gripon confirmed that Yonko was fit to stand trial after determining her understanding of legal proceedings and her recollection of events leading up to her child’s death. Yonko denied any history of substance abuse but acknowledged a past head injury and episodes of memory loss during an interview with Gripon.

Records from Child Protective Services revealed a concerning incident in 2019 involving Yonko’s other child, where both parents appeared to be under the influence and in an altered state. State prosecutors opted not to pursue the death penalty against Yonko, citing the gravity of such a decision in the justice system.

Yonko received an automatic life sentence without parole under Texas law due to the victim’s age being under 10. Jurors were deeply affected by the tragic case, with one expressing the difficulty in reaching a decision while considering the victim, Hannah.
