Yolanda Ramos, the mother of a woman who underwent euthanasia after a suicide attempt, is seeking to locate individuals who allegedly sexually assaulted her daughter. Noelia Castillo Ramos passed away at the age of 25 on March 26 in Barcelona following a suicide attempt that left her paralyzed. Yolanda has taken steps to initiate formal investigations into the reported rapes of Noelia by filing complaints with prosecutors in Barcelona and Tarragona.
New evidence of the sexual assaults came to light through Noelia’s diary, which she entrusted to her mother before her death. In the diary, Noelia detailed being raped by her ex-boyfriend and also mentioned being drugged, given alcohol, and raped by three men in Salou, a popular tourist destination.
Yolanda revealed, “Noelia disclosed the assaults publicly, and she gave me her diary on the day she passed away. Reading it provided me with clarity.” After the traumatic incidents, Noelia attempted suicide, resulting in her becoming paraplegic. Her deteriorating mental health led her to seek euthanasia to end her suffering.
Despite strong opposition from her family, Noelia’s wish for euthanasia was approved by an independent panel in 2024 after unsuccessful legal challenges from her father and the Spanish Foundation of Christian Lawyers. The case reached Spain’s Supreme Court following the rejection of appeals, including a final attempt at the European Court of Human Rights.
