A mother had the heartwarming opportunity to reunite with the recipient of her late daughter’s hand through a limb transplant. Jackie Kirwan, 65, shared that her daughter, Georgie Peterson, would be thrilled to know the positive impact she made on someone’s life. Georgie, aged 33 and from Liverpool, passed away last August after battling a severe illness that caused debilitating seizures.
Georgie had been a registered organ donor since the age of 17, and following her passing, Jackie made the decision to donate her daughter’s limbs. One of Georgie’s hands was transplanted to Kim Smith, who lost her hands and feet due to sepsis in 2017. After exchanging letters, the women met earlier this year, describing the experience as deeply emotional.
During their second meeting, Jackie fondly referred to Georgie as their “human sunshine,” emphasizing Georgie’s belief in the importance of the soul over the body. Reflecting on their emotional reunion, Jackie expressed her willingness to meet Kim, who expressed everlasting gratitude for receiving Georgie’s hand.
Kim, 64, expressed the rarity of such meetings between donors’ families and recipients. She had written a letter of gratitude following her surgery and later received a heartwarming response from Jackie, leading to their emotional face-to-face meeting in March.
Georgie had faced challenges due to a rare brain disorder called peri ventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH), which led to drug-resistant epilepsy. Despite her struggles, Georgie pursued an English degree, enjoyed dancing and swimming, but her severe epilepsy limited her daily activities.
Georgie’s health deteriorated, leading to her eventual passing in August 2025. Following her demise, Jackie was surprised to learn that donating limbs was an option. Driven by Georgie’s belief in the importance of the soul, Jackie agreed to the donation, leading to the heartwarming connection between Kim and Georgie’s hand.
Kim, a former hairdresser, lost her limbs due to sepsis in 2017 and underwent a successful hand transplant, becoming naturally left-handed. Grateful for the gift of a new hand, Kim has become an advocate for Sepsis Research and aims to raise awareness about sepsis and epilepsy in honor of Georgie.
Jackie and Kim are committed to keeping Georgie’s memory alive while advocating for important causes close to their hearts.
