A mother who vanished just before Christmas 24 years ago, leaving her children behind, has been located following an arrest for driving under the influence. Michele Hundley Smith, then 38 years old, disappeared from her residence in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Law enforcement confirmed that she is alive and well but has chosen to keep her whereabouts undisclosed from her family.
She was last seen driving her green 1995 Pontiac Trans Sport van to Virginia for holiday shopping on December 9, 2001, abandoning her children aged 19, 14, and seven at the time. Now 62, it has been revealed that she was arrested for impaired driving in November 2001, a month before her disappearance.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office stated that at her request, her current location will not be revealed. Her family has been informed of her discovery and her wish for privacy. Her daughter, Amanda Smith, who has been tirelessly searching for her mother, expressed a mix of emotions upon learning of her safety.
Amanda shared her feelings on Facebook, mentioning the complexities of her emotions and uncertainty about rebuilding a relationship with her mother. While details are scarce, Amanda emphasized that her mother has made a choice for a new life, and for now, that knowledge is sufficient.
