“Mother’s Advocacy Spurs Legislation Change for Deceased Child’s Data”

Date:

A mother who has been engaged in a battle with technology companies to seek clarification about her son’s passing expressed her emotional reaction upon learning that legislation would be altered. Ellen Roome, whose 14-year-old son Julian “Jools” Sweeney passed away under unclear circumstances in 2022, has been advocating for a change in the law to ensure the automatic preservation of a child’s data posthumously.

In a significant development for her cause, government officials have announced an amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill mandating social media platforms to retain data. Ms. Roome, suspecting her son’s death may be linked to an online challenge gone awry, disclosed that Technology Secretary Liz Kendall personally contacted her to deliver the news, even amidst the early hours of the morning.

Reflecting on the victory of her campaign, Ms. Roome shared her sentiments, stating, “I persevered. I fought tirelessly. I sought to derive something positive from the tragedy of Jools’s life, and now, it’s coming to fruition.” She emphasized the importance of the new law in assisting other parents, highlighting her desire to prevent others from experiencing the agony of seeking answers as she has.

She expressed her relentless determination to uncover the circumstances surrounding Jools’s demise, emphasizing her ongoing efforts to secure access to social media data and police-held phone records. TikTok has asserted its inability to retrieve Jools’s social media history due to legal obligations to erase personal data.

Cabinet minister Ms. Kendall affirmed her commitment to supporting bereaved families, including Ms. Roome, in their pursuit of truth following such tragedies. Ms. Roome is involved in a legal battle against TikTok along with other families in the UK whose children passed away under similar circumstances while engaging in the “blackout challenge.”

The controversial viral trend involves participants choking themselves until losing consciousness. TikTok has maintained that the challenge has been prohibited on its platform since 2020, emphasizing efforts to prevent the promotion of hazardous activities.
